Big
Wooden Radio Discography
Big
Wooden Radio
Our
first album, recorded by engineer John Svec in November and December
of 1993 at Minstrel Studios in Iowa City, IA. We recorded this as a
4-piece band, (just Joe, Will, Sam and Dan) and it is very acoustic.
The only one plugged in at all was Dan. This album showcases the acoustic
roots of the band and features songs by Dan, Sam and Will that have
become BWR audience favorites over the years. There are also a few on
this album that we just don’t play at all anymore, so buy the
CD. It’s the only way you’re going to get to hear them.
Who knows, you might really like them. Then you can tell us and we might
start playing them again.

Along
These Lines
This,
our second CD, is currently out of print. In other words, you can’t
get it anymore. If you’ve got a copy already, it’s probably
worth some cash … to somebody. We recorded this at the University
of Iowa Audio Lab and Trilogy Studios during March, April and May of
1996 and it features a bunch of songs by people other than us, as well
as a few BWR originals that you would recognize from live shows. We
like the record well enough, and a groundswell of support from BWR fans
might get us to invest in having a few more copies produced. Let us
know and we’ll see what we can do.

Visiting
Normaltown
We
recorded this album over an 8-day stretch in December of 1998 down in
Athens, GA at John Keane Studio. It was engineered and mixed by John
Keane himself, who is noted in the musical world for his work with such
musical greats as R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Nanci Griffith, the Indigo
Girls, Uncle Tupelo and Big Wooden Radio … just to drop a few
names. John is a recording genius and a great pedal steel guitar player,
an instrument he drops tastefully into a few of the tracks on this CD.
Our good
friend, band mate and musical guru Andy Carlson produced Visiting Normaltown.
Andy was a benevolent taskmaster who helped us to make what we think
is a fine recording in a very short period of time, and without killing
each other. No small feat. Andy also plays all the violin and electric
guitar on this album.
We think
this CD features the best singing and playing we’ve ever recorded.
Plus, we like the tunes. They run from thought provoking, to irreverent,
and to melancholy and downright disturbing.
All in
all, this CD has been a great success for BWR. It got great reviews
by national and international music critics, got picked up by a record
label … all that good stuff. It is certainly a departure from
the first two albums. It has a much bigger sound, more instrumentation,
and might be considered a bit more “acoustic pop” than the
others. Just another step in the musical growth process.
Buy a
copy and see what you think.
