Here
are the web pages of some bands we have played with over the
years and some who have had a great influence on our music.
Some of them we just plain like a lot.
Robbie
Fulks
We put Robbie’s “Let’s Kill Saturday Night”
on Visiting Normaltown. Robbie is fine singer/songwriter with
a great local tie through his longtime musical relationship
with Iowa City fiddler Al Murphy. You can listen to this cover in its full-length, one-take-live-in-the-fancy-big-name-studio glory by clicking here.
Darrell
Scott
Darrell’s “Heartbreak Town” can be found on
our Visiting Normaltown CD. We released it before the Dixie
Chicks. Seriously, we did.
Sam
Bush
Probably the greatest mandolin player alive … and one
incredible entertainer. Sam was one of the founders of New Grass
Revival, a band that has had a great influence on BWR.
The
Neville Brothers
We played with the Nevilles at the Des Moines Civic Center.
They were very gracious and shared their backstage catering meal of gumbo & beverages.
The
Del McCoury Band
In our estimation, the Del McCoury Band may be the greatest
bluegrass band performing today. They put on an astounding live
show. The time we opened for them we were sorely in awe. 5 guys
– one microphone. Sheesh.
Perfect Strangers
Perfect Strangers, featuring Bob Black on banjo, are one of the great touring bluegrass bands in the country. Plus - we know them, and the great Forrest Rose was their bass player until his passing in 2005.
Bob
Black
The official site of Iowa City area songwriter and banjo player
extraordinaire. Bob and his wife/musical partner Kristie are
wonderful and talented people. Bob has played with bluegrass
greats Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Frank Wakefield, Kenny Baker
and Buck White … just to name a few. Bob is considered
to be one of the foremost players of fiddle tunes on the 5-string
banjo and is a local treasure. Plus, he’s our friend.
Big
Sandy & his Flyright Boys
Man can he sing and BOY do they swing.
The
Band
These guys may have been one of the biggest influences on BWR’s
music. We play several of their songs.
Little
Feat
We like Little Feat and do some of their tunes in our live shows.
But only the old tunes.
Dan
Hicks
Dan Hicks is a swing music legend. When we played with him,
he sounded great but was not in a particularly good mood. We’re
sure he’s not that way all the time.
Yonder
Mountain String Band
It’s nice to see young guys playing the same kind of music
some of us were playing in back in the 70’s. Everything
old is new again.
Planet
Bluegrass
BWR played the Telluride Bluegrass Festival a few years back.
It rained during the start of our set, and Sam almost ran over Steve Earle,
but we got to see Emmylou Harris get her hair done backstage
and that was good. Dan enjoyed a short conversation with Mary
Chapin Carpenter. He told her about our new CD and she replied,
"SECURITY!" She also busted Sam by snagging the
last piece of pecan pie at the hospitality tent. She was smiling nicely, though.
